Most homeowners see condensation as a problem for their windows. However, it is not something you should worry about, especially when it appears during the summer months. Condensation occurs when moisture in the air comes into contact with a cooler surface, resulting in water droplets. That’s what happens when you leave a glass of cold water sitting on a table for a few minutes or you step out of a cooler room and notice the lenses of your eyeglasses fogging up. Here, the outer surface of the glass is cooler than the air surrounding it.
Condensation in windows shouldn’t concern you, especially if this happens in the summer season. Water droplets may form on the exterior of your windows during the evening when outdoor temperatures drop. It is an indication that your windows have cooled down enough for outdoor humidity to form condensation on the glass and frame surfaces, which would evaporate as temperatures begin to rise again the next day.
You must, however, keep an eye out for window condensation that forms between the glass panels. Double-glazed windows have two glass panes that form a sealed space between them, creating an insulating layer. The space is also filled with an inert gas like argon or krypton to increase the window’s thermal efficiency.
Damage to the seals between the panes can cause air and moisture to seep through the enclosure, reducing the window’s thermal performance. When this happens, you should get in touch with your local contractor for repairs or replacement.
