Window Ratings: How Does SHGC Differ From U-Value?

Style and appeal are not the only factors you should consider when choosing new windows. You must also pay attention to energy efficiency. With energy-saving windows, you will enjoy a more comfortable home and even reduced utility costs. Solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) and U-value are two essential things you should check. However, it’s not uncommon for homeowners to confuse these two factors.

Window Ratings: How Does SHGC Differ From U-Value?

Read on to learn how SHGC differs from U-value.

What Is SHGC?

SHGC is the amount of solar radiation passing through window glass into your home. It involves the sunlight penetrating directly through the glass to your interior and how much heat the glass absorbs and radiates to the room. In areas that receive a lot of sunlight, consider windows with a lower SHGC rating. These windows will keep your air conditioner from working too hard, resulting in lower energy costs.

If you live in a cold climate, you will benefit from windows with higher SHGC. They will allow more heat into your living space, making it easier to heat, especially during the winter months. The less you need to depend on your HVAC system, the more energy savings you will get.

What Is U-Value?

U-value refers to the insulative capabilities of window glass. It signifies how fast hot air can penetrate through the glass. Units with a lower U-value will do a better job of insulating your home. They are great at keeping the heat out in summer and the cold out in winter. Regardless of your location, it pays to invest in windows with good insulative capabilities. You can count on them to keep your home comfortable all year round.
